During the last 2 week ends, one of them is about to finish in a few hours, I decided to take care of my body by:
- doing something very Egyptian like going to the hammam
- going to the hairdresser
The first experience took place in a very old building in Old Cairo: it probably is around 500 years old, and never renewed since then. I went there with two Egyptian friends. As we entered the small door, hidden between shops that sell everything, we found ourselves in a big room, not too clean full of half naked women eatind while sitting on the floor and screaming. After we counted our money and registered the amount on a paper, we left our bagd there and enteered the hammam itself, which is simply a big room with a big levigated stone in the middle and a small "cave" full of steam. Steam allows you to get rid of toxins and after an hour you are ready for the scrub. Scrub means that a huge woman asks you to lay down on the stone and starts peeling your skin off in a very violent way. Afer a week I still bear the scars... after that you can wash yourself...no shwer my dear, go to the fountain and use the plastic thing you find on the floor to rinse. Be carefull: the floor is covered by cockroaches..
Nice experience except the curiosity that my being foreign created in the women...
Today instead I went to one of the most famous beauty centers in Cairo, more specifically in Zamalek. And I was clearly ripped off, because... (I am almost ashamed to write it).. I payed 580 pounds for color plus trimming and having my hair set.
Do you think I will repeat one of the two experiences?? Good for me that I (usually) am not the kind of woman who gets crazy about beauty treatments.......
